The third showdown between Dricus Du Plessis and Sean Strickland divides opinion: between skepticism and fascination for an already historic duel.
To remember:
- Daniel Cormier questions the appeal of a third fight between Dricus Du Plessis and Sean Strickland.
- Dricus Du Plessis, already a two-time winner, aims for another title after his victories over Strickland.
- The commentator, though a fan of high-level matchups, wonders about the draw of another bout.
Incredible but true: the fight between Dricus Du Plessis and Sean Strickland could very well have a third installment, and this time, the UFC title is on the line. A scenario that’s already sparking reactions, even among the biggest names in the sport. Daniel Cormier, UFC legend and seasoned commentator, recently expressed his doubts about the appeal of such a matchup during an appearance on his YouTube channel.
Yet, the history between these two fighters is already rich. Du Plessis has defeated Strickland twice, including in a close bout at UFC 302 in June 2024. So why a third fight? The South African, now in the middleweight division, dreams of another title after his impressive victories.
Cormier, while acknowledging the quality of high-level matchups, questions the appeal of another fight between these two. “Is a third showdown really necessary?” he asked, noting that fan enthusiasm could be put to the test. Yet, the UFC has often bet on trilogies to draw attention, as in the cases of Jon Jones or Israel Adesanya.
The question remains: will fans and promoters show up? Could a third fight between Du Plessis and Strickland become a classic, or on the contrary, one fight too many? Time will tell.
