In the ultra-competitive world of the UFC, every fight is a strategic battle where the details make the difference. Charles Oliveira, former lightweight champion and holder of an impressive record, recently shared his analysis of Carlos Prates, a potential opponent for Islam Makhachev. According to him, the Brazilian has all the tools to challenge the welterweight champion, who has been undefeated since 2019.
Oliveira, who trains alongside Ian Garry, highlights the lessons learned from the Garry vs. Makhachev fight. The Russian, known for his footwork and precision, showed vulnerabilities that Garry exploited. Oliveira believes that Prates could replicate this strategy. « Garry showed how to land on Makhachev with low kicks and rapid combinations. Prates has the power and technique to do it, » Oliveira confides.
A Formidable Striking Power
With seven KO wins in eight UFC fights, Carlos Prates has proven he can end a fight with a single strike. His aggressive style and ability to chain punches make him a dangerous opponent for Makhachev. Oliveira emphasizes: « Prates has the ability to surprise Makhachev with powerful combinations. If the Russian lowers his guard, even for a second, Prates can take advantage. »
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Low Kicks: Decisive Weapons
Beyond his power, Prates is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu expert, an area where Makhachev might show weaknesses. Oliveira explains: « Makhachev is a complete fighter, but jiu-jitsu is a domain where he can be vulnerable. Prates, a black belt, could surprise him on the ground. » Additionally, low kicks, used brilliantly by Garry, could weaken Makhachev’s stance, making him more vulnerable to attacks.
Is His Invincibility at Risk?
Since 2019, Islam Makhachev has remained undefeated, dominating his opponents with impressive technical mastery. Yet, Oliveira believes it’s possible to break this streak. « Makhachev has never been knocked out, but no one is invincible. Prates has everything it takes to test that invincibility. It would be a historic fight if it happened, » he adds.
